Sidechain Without a Ghost Kick

Every producer learns the same trick early on: to make a track breathe, you route a kick into a compressor’s sidechain and let it duck everything else. It works. It has also been a workaround since the day someone first tried it — and on a modern session it costs more than it gives.

This is how to get the same pumping movement by shaping the volume directly, why that is more reliable, and how to set it up in a couple of minutes with StarChain.

What the ghost kick actually costs you

The classic method needs a trigger. If the real kick is not clean enough — and it rarely is, once it has been layered, saturated and compressed — you build a silent one: an extra channel, a muted output, a routing you will have to remember in six months.

Three things go wrong from there. The shape of the duck depends on the compressor, so attack and release become a negotiation instead of a decision. The timing depends on the trigger, which means a kick that moves by a few milliseconds moves the whole groove with it. And the result is not the same twice: reopen the project after a plugin update, or bounce on another machine, and the pump can land slightly differently.

None of this matters when you are chasing a rough idea. It matters a lot when a client asks for one more version of a track you finished three months ago.

Shape the volume instead of triggering it

The alternative is to draw the movement you want and lock it to the grid. No ghost channel, no compressor doing a job it was not designed for, and a curve you can see instead of a behaviour you have to infer from a gain reduction meter.

That is what StarChain does. It is a sidechain plugin for rhythmic volume shaping: you decide the shape, the length and how deep it goes, and it repeats exactly, every bar, on every playback.

The setup, in four moves

1. Put it where the ducking should happen. Insert StarChain on the channel that needs to move — the pad, the bass, the whole instrumental bus — not on the kick. This is the first mental switch: you are no longer routing a trigger into a processor, you are shaping the destination.

2. Choose how it keeps time. In Sync mode the pattern follows the project tempo, which is what you want nine times out of ten: change the BPM and the movement follows. Audio mode triggers from a real signal when you deliberately want the groove to breathe with a performance, and MIDI mode lets you play the movement from a clip, which is the fastest way to make a pump stop being mechanical.

3. Set the length. Pattern lengths run from 1/8 to 1/1. Eighths give you the classic four-to-the-floor pulse; a whole bar gives a long swell that works under a drop without turning the track into a helicopter. Changing section? Change the length, not the routing.

4. Balance it with Mix and Floor. Mix sets how much of the shaped signal you hear against the original, and Floor keeps a level underneath the effect so the track never fully disappears between hits. These two do the work that a compressor’s ratio and knee were being asked to do by accident.

Three starting points

The house pump. Sync mode, 1/4 length, a curve that drops fast and recovers smoothly, Mix at 100%, Floor low but not at zero. Put it on the instrumental bus, leave the kick out of it, and the track starts moving without anything sounding processed.

The pad that stays out of the way. Sync, 1/2 or 1/1, a gentle curve, Mix around 40%. The pad keeps its body but stops crowding the mid-range every time the beat lands. This is the setting that makes an arrangement feel bigger without adding anything.

Space for a vocal. MIDI mode, triggered by a clip that follows the phrasing, with a short, shallow duck. It clears room for the words where the words are, instead of ducking on a rigid grid that ignores the singer.

When the old method still wins

Honesty first: if what you want is the sound of a specific compressor being pushed — the character it adds while it ducks — then a compressor is the right tool, and no volume shaper will imitate it. Shaping is about movement, not about colour.

The same goes for a groove that has to follow a live performance with no stable tempo. Audio mode covers a lot of that ground, but a played duck is a played duck.

For everything else — which in practice is most electronic music — drawing the curve is faster to set up, easier to change, and identical every time you open the session.
